How to Set Up a Mail Vacation Hold

Are you going on vacation and don’t want your mail to pile up while you’re gone? Or maybe you’re closing the office for an extended amount of time and don’t want to worry about your mail getting delivered during that time. In either case, putting a hold on your mail is a very easy process that can be done online or in person. In this blog post, we will provide readers with step-by-step instructions on how to set up a vacation hold for their mail.

What Is a Vacation Hold?

A vacation hold is when the United States Postal Service (USPS) temporarily stops delivering mail to your address for a set period of time. This service is perfect for those who are going on vacation or will be away from their home/office for an extended amount of time and don’t want their mail to pile up.

Standard vs. Extended Mail Hold

There are two different types of vacation holds:

Standard Vacation Hold

With this type of vacation hold, your mail will be held for up to 30 days. You can choose to have your mail delivered to you once you return, or you can pick it up from your local post office.

Extended Vacation Hold

With this type of vacation hold, your mail will be held for up to 12 months. You can choose to have your mail delivered to you once you return, or you can pick it up from your local post office.

How to Set Up a Vacation Hold

Now that we’ve gone over what a vacation hold is and the different types of vacation holds, let’s get into how you can set one up for your mail.

There are two ways that you can set up a vacation hold: online or in person.

Online

If you want to set up a vacation hold online, you will need to create an account with the USPS. Once you have created and logged into your account, click on the “Change My Address” tab and then select “Vacation Hold Mail.” From there, you will be able to fill out the necessary information and submit your vacation hold request.

In Person

If you would rather set up your vacation hold in person, you can do so by going to your local post office. Once you’re there, tell the postal worker that you would like to set up a vacation hold and they will take care of the rest.

When to Set Up Your Vacation Hold

You should set up your vacation hold at least three days before you plan on leaving for vacation. This will give the USPS enough time to process your request and put your vacation hold into effect.

You Can Only Set Up a Mail Hold When You Own the Property

It’s important to note that you can only set up a vacation hold if you own the property where your mail will be delivered. If you are renting a property, the owner of the property will need to set up a vacation hold.

Remember to Cancel Your Vacation Hold

Once you return from vacation or your office reopens, don’t forget to cancel your vacation hold. If you don’t, the USPS will continue to hold your mail and you will have to pick it up from the post office.

To cancel your vacation hold, simply log into your USPS account and click on the “Change My Address” tab. From there, you will be able to cancel your vacation hold.
