Lowell is the fourth largest city in Massachusetts, with a population of 108,522. It is surrounded by Dracut, Tewksbury, Billerica, Chelmsford, and Tyngsborough.
Lowell is perhaps best known for playing a major role in the American Industrial Revolution. Two main rivers, the Merrimack, and the Concord, run through Lowell, which made it an ideal location for cotton mills.
During the mid-1800s, Lowell was a major producer of cotton, until the early 1900s when southern states outpaced the mill city’s production.
Lowell is also home to a number of historic sites and museums that celebrate the city’s history. It has a rich arts and folk music culture, hosting the largest free folk festival, The Lowell Folk Festival, annually since 1990.
