Sometimes when it is raining, vehicles will suddenly slide uncontrollably due to the tires losing loss of traction because of the water on the road-this is called hydroplaning.

Rain is an especially dangerous element while driving because we do not always have the best knowledge of certain road surfaces, this makes it harder to make important decisions. For example, when meeting a puddle or corner-we may not know the depth of the puddle or the corner may be improperly sloped. Therefore, it is best to slow down, even going a bit under the speed limit.

Some of us have been tempted to tailgate that particularly slow driver at times, however, this is a dangerous and ultimately frowned upon course of action. Even more so, it’s important not to do it on a rainy day. In rainy weather, you should typically give about four seconds of stop space between you and the car in front of you.

Likewise, driving too close to someone can trigger an aggressive reaction of the person in front of you. Instead of riding on their tail, consider safely switching lanes instead if possible.

Though we may be driving as carefully as we possibly can, sometimes our vehicles will do things we don’t like including skidding. It is imperative that we know how to handle a skid and how to gain control of the vehicle. Here are a couple of tips on how to do this:

• Do NOT panic! Try to stay calm so you can handle the situation.
• Look into the direction of where you intend to go (the front of road)
• Steer into the direction you are skidding (if your car is skidding right, go right)
• Do NOT slam on the brakes (try to break slowly)
• See if you can bring the vehicle to a stop so you can get back on the road.
